Chapter 4 - the shadow on the terrace

Daniel stood motionless by his desk, digesting every word. The pieces of a tragic, dark puzzle were slowly falling into place.
Four years ago, Julian Whitfield—the intended heir to the Whitfield billionaire fortune—had suddenly vanished from the corporate world, giving up his inheritance to live under an alias. Daniel had assumed his brother left out of stress and burden. But now, learning that Julian had secretly married and fathered a child changed everything.
"This story makes no sense," Diana hissed, pacing across the Persian rug in her gold heels. "If Julian wanted you to have help, why did you wait four long years to come here, Grace? Why did you apply for a low-paying housekeeper job three months ago instead of walking up to Daniel directly?"
Grace looked up, her brown eyes filled with raw honesty. "Because I didn't believe him at first. I thought he was delirious when he said his brother was a billionaire named Daniel Whitfield. I thought it was just a story. But after four years of working two jobs to raise Maya alone, I was starving. I couldn't afford rent. I saw an opening for a housekeeping position at this estate on a job board. I took the job just to see if the name Whitfield was real."
"And why didn't you show Daniel the bear three months ago when you started working here?" Eleanor asked softly.
"I was terrified," Grace confessed, hugging Maya tighter. "I saw how powerful Mr. Whitfield was. I was afraid if I walked up to him with a crazy story about a dead brother, he would think I was a fraud, fire me, and leave my daughter homeless on the street. I was waiting for the right moment..."
Daniel walked over, kneeling in front of Grace and Maya just as he had in the hallway. He reached out, gently patting Maya's head. The little girl gave him a small, shy smile.
"You don't ever have to be terrified in this house again, Grace," Daniel said, his voice firm and absolute. "You and Maya are staying here tonight."
"Daniel, you cannot be serious!" Diana shrieked. "You're letting a maid and her child stay in the master suites? What will the board say? What will the press say?"
"I don't give a damn about the press, Diana," Daniel snapped, turning a cold glare toward his sister-in-law. "This is my brother's child. She carries Whitfield blood."
At 1:00 AM, the estate settled into a quiet hush. Grace and Maya were placed in the luxurious second-floor guest suite, complete with a king-sized bed, soft cotton pajamas, and a roaring fireplace. Little Maya fell fast asleep instantly, her small hand resting on her brown teddy bear.
Grace lay beside her daughter, gazing at the hand-carved ceiling. For the first time in four agonizing years, she felt a sense of safety.
Suddenly, the soft metallic click of the terrace door echoed through the quiet room.

Grace sat up instantly, her heart pounding. The sheer curtains near the balcony rustled in the cold winter wind. A tall, dark figure dressed in black tactical clothing stepped through the shattered glass of the terrace door, moving quietly toward the bed.
The intruder reached out, his gloved hand reaching directly for the worn teddy bear resting beside sleeping Maya!
