Chapter 2 - the patch from the past

The bustling noise of the grand ballroom seemed to fade into complete silence. Daniel remained on one knee, his broad hand trembling slightly as his fingers brushed the coarse fabric of the blue star-shaped patch.
It wasn't a factory-made design. The patch was cut from an old denim jacket, stitched with thick blue embroidery thread in a crude, crooked crisscross pattern. Daniel recognized every single thread. Twenty-five years ago, when he was ten years old, he had accidentally ripped his older brother Julian's favorite stuffed bear while playing in the woods. Afraid his brother would be upset, Daniel had cut a star from his own denim jacket and sewn it over the torn foot himself.
"Daniel, what on earth are you doing?" Diana asked, stepping forward with an exasperated sigh. "It’s just a dirty old toy. Send the girl and her mother back to the service quarters so our guests can enjoy the evening."
Daniel stood up slowly. His height towered over Diana, and the expression in his dark eyes was so fiercely intense that Diana instinctively took a step back, her gold gown rustling.
"Quiet, Diana," Daniel said, his deep voice carrying a lethal, quiet authority that chilled the air between them.
Eleanor Whitfield stepped closer, her sharp emerald gown catching the light. Her keen, observant eyes shifted from her son's pale face down to the small girl standing beside Grace. Eleanor looked closely at Maya's soft jawline and wide brown eyes, her breath catching slightly in her throat.
"Daniel..." Eleanor murmured softly. "Where did that patch come from?"
Daniel ignored his mother's question, turning his full focus to Grace. Grace stood frozen, holding Maya's small hand, her cheeks flushed with confusion and fear.
"Grace," Daniel said, his voice softer now, yet commanding complete honesty. "Who gave your daughter this bear?"
"My... my late husband," Grace stammered, her hands trembling against her apron. "He gave it to me before Maya was born. He said it was the only thing he had left from his childhood."
"What was your husband's name?" Daniel demanded.
"David," Grace replied softly, tears welling in her eyes at the memory. "David Miller. He was an architectural woodworker. He passed away in an accident four years ago, right before I found out I was pregnant."
Daniel took a deep breath, reaching into his beige suit jacket. He pulled out his leather wallet and extracted a small, faded photograph taken twenty years ago. He held it out in front of Grace.
The photograph showed two young boys standing in front of the Whitfield estate, laughing in the summer sun. The taller boy held a brown teddy bear with a blue star patch on its foot.
Grace looked at the photograph, and her knees instantly buckled. She gasped, covering her mouth as fresh tears spilled over her lashes.

"That’s David..." Grace sobbed, pointing at the taller boy in the photo. "That’s my husband."
Daniel looked down at the photo, his jaw clenching tightly. "His name wasn't David Miller, Grace. That was my older brother... Julian Whitfield."
