Chapter 14 - Eudora’s Apology

My mother wanted to see Sorrel.

I said no for months.

Then she wrote a letter.

Dr. Morris reviewed.

Sorrel was six by then.

He chose to hear.

Eudora wrote:

Sorrel,

I broke your tent.

Direct.

I told you real grandchildren got tents.

There.

That was cruel and also untrue.

Important.

I already knew you were biologically part of our family.

There.

I said the opposite because I was trying to hide something that adults should have handled honestly.

Then:

Even if you had not been biologically related to me, you were already Bramwell’s son and part of the family.

Good.

Then:

I also told your dad to choose between you and me.

There.

A grandmother should not make a child feel like a parent must choose.

Then:

I am sorry.

No:

I was protecting Garrett.

No excuse.

At the end:

I will not ask you to see me until you want to.

Sorrel listened.

Then:

“Grandma lied blood?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she was scared about adults finding out who your biological father was.”

“Stupid.”

I almost corrected language.

Stopped.

Accurate enough.

“Do you want to see her?”

“No.”

Done.

He missed her later.

That did not mean contact.

Children can miss someone and still not want them close.

May you like

We learned that lesson from other families too.
