Chapter 20 - Eudora Pays for the Tent

My mother sent $119 months earlier.

But the apology came later in person.

Sorrel was six.

Neutral park.

He wanted me there.

Eudora arrived holding nothing.

No toys.

No candy.

Good.

She sat on bench.

Sorrel stood beside me.

“Hi.”

“Hi, Sorrel.”

Then:

“I broke your tent.”

“Yes.”

“I said you weren’t a real grandchild.”

“Yes.”

“I knew that wasn’t true.”

Sorrel frowned.

“Why say?”

Eudora breathed.

“Because I was trying to hide an adult secret and I was angry.”

“Bad.”

“Yes.”

“Dad says even if not blood, still family.”

She cried.

“He’s right.”

“Then you extra wrong.”

I covered my mouth.

Eudora laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Sorrel looked at me.

I did nothing.

He said:

“Okay.”

Not forgiveness.

Acknowledgment.

Then:

“Can you camp?”

Eudora smiled.

“I can.”

“Good camp?”

“Your grandfather thought I was terrible.”

“Were?”

“Yes.”

Sorrel considered.

“Maybe next year.”

That invitation was not promise.

Eudora understood.

The meeting lasted twenty-five minutes.

No hug until Sorrel chose one at end.

Brief.

Then he ran toward swings.

Eudora watched.

She said:

“I don’t deserve that.”

I answered:

“This isn’t about deserving. It’s about what he wants.”

She nodded.

May you like

Finally.
