Chapter 24 - The Campsite Again

Two years after the incident, we returned to the same state park.
Not whole family.
Me.
Sorrel.
Miles and his daughter.
Then Sorrel asked if Owen could come.
Dana agreed.
Garrett did not.
Why?
“Maybe the boys should have one place that isn’t about me.”
Good.
They came with Dana for one night.
Red Base went up.
Sorrel chose the spot.
Owen had his own tent.
No hierarchy.
At dusk Sorrel asked:
“Can Owen sleep mine?”
I looked at both.
“Your tents. Your choice.”
They moved sleeping bags into Red Base.
Ten minutes later:
“Too hot.”
Owen went back.
Normal.
Eudora did not attend.
She had been invited for afternoon lunch only.
Sorrel’s choice.
She arrived with pie.
Helped wash dishes.
Left before dark.
No one mentioned family photograph.
No one staged descendant lineup.
We took pictures because children were muddy.
That was enough.
When Eudora left, she asked Sorrel:
“Next year?”
He said:
“Maybe.”
She smiled.
Healthy uncertainty.
That night Sorrel’s flashlight failed.
Battery dead.
He said:
“Dad, secret note?”
“No.”
“Check.”
We opened compartment.
Nothing.
Just batteries.
He laughed.
Then we replaced them.
No hidden history.
May you like
Good.
