Chapter 22 - Owen’s Anger

Owen was nine when his parents told him fully.
He became furious at Garrett.
Not Sorrel.
“You lied every camping.”
Garrett said:
“Yes.”
“You knew he brother.”
“Yes.”
“And said cousin.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I was scared.”
Owen shouted:
“Everybody scared!”
Child wisdom.
Then:
“Did Mom know?”
“No.”
“Grandma?”
“Yes.”
That made Eudora lose Owen too for a while.
Consequences spread.
She had thought hiding truth preserved family.
Instead both boys eventually learned adults had curated their relationships.
Owen refused to see her for two months.
Then asked.
Similar to Sorrel.
No one forced.
One day the boys sat together playing cards.
Owen said:
“So we half brothers.”
Sorrel:
“And cousins.”
Owen:
“That’s not how normal family tree works.”
Sorrel:
“Our tree dumb.”
I laughed from kitchen.
Dana called:
“Do not encourage.”
Too late.
They drew a family tree with lines crossing everywhere.
At the center they wrote:
WEIRD.
Fine.
May you like
At least it was theirs.
