Chapter 12 - The chair was Claire’s hiding place

A former Hayes household employee named Ruth Kelley was eighty-two.
She had worked for Jessica and Claire’s parents when she was young.
Michael’s attorney found her through pension records.
Ruth remembered Claire.
Very well.
“She hated family dinners.”
“Why?”
“Mrs. Hayes made her serve.”
“Serve?”
“Not employed. Punishment.”
When Claire became pregnant, Bernice stopped allowing her to sit at the family dining table.
Instead, she carried plates.
Refilled water.
Cleared dishes.
Jessica, twenty-four then, had already married Harold but returned often.
Did Jessica object?
Ruth was careful.
“Sometimes.”
“Sometimes?”
“She told her mother Claire shouldn’t be humiliated in front of guests.”
That complicated the villain story.
Then:
“But Jessica also believed the baby should be adopted.”
There.
Ruth remembered Claire hiding small possessions beneath one particular chair.
“Her mother searched her room.”
“What did she hide?”
“Letters. Pictures. Little things.”
The chair later moved to Jessica’s house after Bernice died.
Nobody knew the pocket remained.
Why bracelet and photo?
Ruth did not know.
Maybe Claire placed them there before being sent away.
Maybe she planned to retrieve them.
She never did.
The chair carried them for nearly four decades.
Not magic.
May you like
Just neglect.
