Chapter 17 - The DNA test

Claire did not demand DNA.
Michael did.
Why?
“I need one fact no one can narrate.”
Fair.
They used an accredited laboratory.
Chain of custody.
Claire.
Michael.
Result:
Probability of maternity greater than 99.99 percent.
No surprise.
Still important.
Michael stared at the report.
Then laughed once.
“What?”
“I spent thirty-nine years thinking my mother was a woman who never gave birth to me.”
I waited.
“Does that erase her raising you?”
“No.”
“Does Claire’s biology automatically make her Mom?”
“No.”
He looked relieved.
Identity can become dangerous when people think every truth must immediately replace another.
Jessica was his adoptive mother.
Claire was his biological mother.
Jessica raised him.
Claire lost him under pressure.
Both.
Then Michael said:
“Emily.”
“Yes?”
“I grabbed you.”
I stared.
“What?”
“At the banquet.”
“Yes.”
“I keep thinking about her letters. Everyone told Claire what she was allowed to do because it was easier for the family.”
I said nothing.
He continued:
“You tried to leave. I physically stopped you because it was easier for the family.”
There.
The pattern had finally reached him.
Not identical.
Connected.
May you like
That mattered.
