Chapter 26 - The girls choose their own food

Two years after the banquet, Michael hosted Megan’s sixth birthday dinner.

Small.

His townhouse.

No formal Hayes ballroom.

No antique chairs.

Jessica was invited for one hour.

Under conditions.

No comments about portions.

No comments about posture unless safety.

No making the girls serve adults.

No correcting Emily? I was not staying long.

Jessica agreed.

At dinner, shrimp appeared.

I almost laughed.

Michael noticed.

“Too much?”

“Maybe.”

Olivia reached immediately.

Everyone froze for half a second.

Jessica looked at her.

Then at Michael.

Then said nothing.

Olivia put three shrimp on her plate.

Megan said:

“I want five.”

Michael answered:

“Start with three. Get more if you want.”

Normal.

Jessica’s hands tightened around her napkin.

Then relaxed.

Later she asked Megan:

“Would you help me carry these cups?”

Megan said:

“No. I’m playing.”

Jessica opened her mouth.

Stopped.

Michael took the cups.

There.

No speech.

No generational healing montage.

A child said no.

An adult adjusted.

Sometimes that is what change looks like.
