Chapter 21 - Jessica loses the foundation chair

The Hayes Heritage Foundation conducted an independent governance review.

Not because Claire’s adoption made Jessica unfit.

The foundation cared about:

Current conduct.

Misrepresentation.

Safeguarding.

Jessica had used foundation events to reinforce informal family hierarchy.

She had also directed staff to treat certain younger female relatives differently during formal dinners.

Nothing criminal.

Still inconsistent with board policy after complaints surfaced.

Several employees described:

Girls serving coffee as “tradition.”

Young boys seated with trustees earlier.

Teenage girls assigned hostess duties without equivalent expectations for boys.

The board asked Jessica to step down as chair.

She refused.

A vote removed her.

Six to two.

Michael abstained.

Jessica blamed me.

Then Roland.

Then Claire.

Finally she looked at the minutes and saw something harder.

Her own cousins had voted.

Not conspiracy.

Governance.

She remained a donor.

No exile.

No criminal charge.

No financial ruin.

Just less authority.

That was appropriate.
