Chapter 25 - The bracelet goes home

Claire returned to Massachusetts one year after the banquet.

She wanted the bracelet.

Of course.

I brought it.

Professionally cleaned?

No.

Preserved.

Lightly stabilized by a conservator.

The silver remained dark in places.

Claire held it.

The moon charm turned between her fingers.

“My mother hated this.”

“Why?”

“She said the moon was childish.”

“What did it mean?”

Claire smiled.

“I liked walking the barn after sunset.”

The horse charm came from my grandmother Eleanor.

The C from Marianne.

My mother.

Claire stared at me.

“Your mom was kind.”

“I wish I’d known.”

“She probably thought telling you would burden you.”

I laughed sadly.

“Everybody in this story decided silence was protection.”

Claire nodded.

Then she gave me the faded photograph.

“Keep it for Michael.”

“Are you sure?”

“He should decide what to do with it.”

The bracelet she wore home.

For the first time in nearly forty years.

No ceremony.

Just a clasp closing around an older wrist.

The object finally belonged to the person it had always belonged to.
