Chapter 22 - Jessica and Claire speak

Claire did not want contact.

Then changed her mind after Michael met her twice.

One phone call.

Professionally mediated.

Jessica began:

“I thought I was protecting Michael.”

Claire replied:

“You protected your motherhood.”

Silence.

Jessica cried.

“I loved him.”

“I know.”

“You were sixteen.”

“Yes.”

“You had no idea how to raise a baby.”

“Neither did you.”

Jessica laughed once through tears.

True.

Then:

“Harold and I gave him a good life.”

Claire answered:

“You did.”

That surprised everyone.

Then:

“And you told him I abandoned him.”

There.

Jessica said:

“I thought if he knew—”

“You thought he would love you less.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

There.

The central fear.

Not money.

Not inheritance.

Love as a limited resource.

Jessica had believed motherhood could only remain secure if Claire disappeared.

Then spent decades enforcing a family culture where belonging depended on staying in the assigned seat.

The call ended without forgiveness.

Good.
