Chapter 19 - Claire and Michael meet

Their first meeting happened in Kentucky.

Not at the Hayes mansion.

Not on television.

Not with all of us.

Michael went alone.

Claire chose a quiet room at the therapeutic riding center after closing.

He told me the story later.

Claire stood when he entered.

Then neither moved.

Michael said:

“Hi.”

Claire cried immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

He answered:

“I don’t know what to call you.”

Good opening.

She said:

“Claire is fine.”

They talked for four hours.

No instant mother-son embrace.

Claire showed photographs.

Pregnancy.

Michael as newborn.

One photo of Claire holding him at two—the same day as the picture under the chair.

How?

Jessica had allowed Claire one visit after pressure from Harold.

Claire had brought the photo home.

Then Bernice found it.

Claire thought it had been destroyed.

Apparently she hid another copy under the chair.

The bracelet?

Same day.

Bernice told her she was behaving:

“like a sentimental child.”

Claire hid it with the photograph.

Then she was sent away again after an argument.

She never retrieved either.

Michael asked:

“Did you abandon me?”

Claire answered:

“No.”

Then:

“I also stopped trying eventually.”

There.

Honest.

“I was exhausted. I had no money. Then I married. Then I had another child. Then years passed. I told myself you were safer if I stayed away.”

Michael asked:

“Were you?”

Claire cried.

“No.”

No fairy tale.

May you like

Just two people meeting after almost four decades of adult decisions made around a child.
