Chapter 1

The DeLuca family estate was a cinematic masterpiece of immense wealth and suffocating tradition, bathed tonight in an opulent glow of blue-and-gold Christmas lights. The grand living room boasted a towering, twenty-foot fir tree, dripping with crystal ornaments and surrounded by an obscene mountain of silver-wrapped gifts. The air smelled of expensive pine, cinnamon, and the crisp arrogance of Chicago’s elite. Laughter echoed through the vast, marble-floored space. Sophie and Emma, the six-year-old twin nieces of the DeLuca empire, sat happily near the roaring fireplace in their matching festive dresses, ripping into expensive toys with carefree, innocent joy.

But the warmth of the holiday did not extend into the massive, industrial-grade kitchen.

Standing precariously on a wooden stool at the deep porcelain sink was six-year-old Renee. She wore a beautiful pale-blue lace dress with a crisp white apron-style overlay and a matching bow holding back her long, wavy light-brown hair. The delicate fabric of her dress was heavily splashed with greasy water. Her tiny, fragile hands trembled violently under the scalding tap as she furiously scrubbed a towering pile of filthy catering plates. Her big, expressive eyes were red and swollen, quietly heartbroken by the isolation, yet she scrubbed in absolute, terrified silence.

Michael DeLuca stepped through the arched doorway of the kitchen and froze.

The thirty-eight-year-old billionaire businessman was a man of terrifying, protective presence. Tall, heavily muscular, and exceptionally handsome, Michael wore an elegant, perfectly tailored navy-blue suit over a gray vest and a pale-blue dress shirt. His thick dark brown hair was swept back, and light stubble framed his sharp, intensely masculine features. He had just returned from a high-stakes corporate acquisition in London, expecting to find his adopted daughter opening her presents. Instead, he found her treated like a scullery maid in his own childhood home.

His eyes swept the room. Across the kitchen island, his mother, Carmen DeLuca, stood sipping champagne. She was a cruel, elegant society matriarch in her early sixties, wearing a sparkling blush-pink evening gown and heavy pearl jewelry. Her short, styled blonde-gray hair framed a face set in a cold, disapproving expression. She did not even look at the child struggling at the sink.

The heavy crystal glass in Michael’s hand shattered against the marble floor.

"Renee?!" Michael demanded, his deep voice tightening with a sudden, stunned anger that instantly killed the holiday music playing softly from the overhead speakers.

Renee gasped and spun around on the stool. The heavy dinner plate she was scrubbing slipped from her soapy fingers and shattered into the porcelain sink. Her big eyes instantly filled with a desperate, overwhelming relief. She scrambled off the wooden stool, her pale-blue shoes slipping slightly on the wet floor, and sprinted across the massive kitchen.

"Daddy!" Renee cried out, her tearful, desperate voice breaking as she threw herself at him. She wrapped her small, wet arms tightly around his leg, burying her face into his tailored navy-blue trousers.

Michael looked down at the trembling child, his sharp features darkening with a rising, uncontrollable fury. He snapped his intense gaze back up to the matriarch standing by the marble island.

"Why is my daughter washing dishes while they open presents?" Michael asked, his voice deadly and perfectly controlled, carrying the full, intimidating weight of the DeLuca empire.
