Chapter 6

The finality of Anthony's words hung in the air, a devastating blow that fractured Michael's very soul. Elena was dead. The woman he loved, the mother of the fragile little girl sitting in the armchair, had died believing Michael had abandoned them both. The betrayal was so absolute, so profoundly evil, that it transcended mere anger.
Michael’s jaw locked. His sharp features turned entirely to stone. The intense, protective presence he carried shifted into a cold, calculated strategy for absolute destruction.
"Get out of my way," Michael commanded, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadened whisper.
He walked over to the leather armchair and carefully lifted Renee into his arms. The little girl wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into his pale-blue dress shirt, clinging to him as if he were the only solid thing in a collapsing world.
"Michael, be reasonable," Carmen pleaded, reaching out a manicured hand as he approached the doorway. Her pearl jewelry clattered softly against her chest. "You cannot just walk away from this family. The Christmas gala is tomorrow night. The press will ask questions. We can manage this narrative internally."
"If you ever touch me again, I will have you arrested for kidnapping," Michael stated, completely ignoring her outstretched hand. He looked at his father, his eyes burning with a lethal promise. "You are finished, Anthony. Both of you."
"I am the Chairman of the Board!" Anthony barked, his authoritative nature flaring up in a desperate attempt to retain control. His lined face turned red. "You are the CEO, but I hold the founding shares! You walk out that door with that girl, you declare war on this family, and I will strip you of your title. I will freeze your assets. You will lose the empire!"
Michael stopped in the doorway. He turned his head slowly, looking at the two people who had destroyed his life for the sake of wealth. He adjusted Renee in his arms, feeling her small heartbeat against his broad chest.
"You think I care about the company?" Michael asked, a dark, humorless smile crossing his handsome face. "I am going to take my daughter. We are leaving this house. And tomorrow morning, I am going to unleash a team of federal lawyers on your trust funds, your offshore accounts, and your founding shares. I am not just going to take the empire, Anthony. I am going to leave you both penniless in the street."

Before Anthony could respond, Michael turned and strode out into the grand hallway. The festive blue-and-gold lights of the living room still glowed brightly. Sophie and Emma were still playing near the towering Christmas tree, laughing happily, completely unaware that the foundation of the DeLuca dynasty had just been violently shattered.
Michael didn't stop for his overcoat. He carried Renee straight out the massive mahogany front doors of the mansion, stepping out into the freezing, snow-covered Chicago night, leaving the toxic legacy of his parents burning in his wake.
