Chapter 17

The safe house in the Swiss Alps was a stunning, isolated chalet constructed of rich, dark wood and massive glass windows overlooking a breathtaking, snow-covered valley. It was a fortress of solitude, heavily guarded by Marcus’s hand-picked security contractors.

Inside, the atmosphere was warm and calm. The fireplace crackled cheerfully, completely devoid of the crisp arrogance of Chicago’s elite. Renee sat on a plush rug in her new, comfortable clothes, coloring in a book Marcus had bought for her in town. She was safe, warm, and entirely insulated from the corporate war raging across the ocean.

Michael stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a thick, dark sweater. He held a cup of black coffee, his sharp, intensely masculine features relaxed for the first time in days as he watched his daughter color.

"She is remarkably resilient," David noted, stepping into the room with his laptop. "Considering what she witnessed at the penthouse."

"She is her mother's daughter," Michael murmured softly, a profound sadness touching his eyes. "Elena was the strongest person I ever met. She ran away from old European money to forge her own path. She didn't care about the wealth."

"Well, the wealth cares about her," David said, setting the laptop on a rustic wooden table. "I have the head of the Swiss Banking Authority on the secure line. We submitted the DNA analysis and the agency director's confession an hour ago. The biometric verification is complete."

Michael set his coffee down and walked over to the table. He looked at the screen, his expression hardening into a mask of pure, absolute outrage directed solely at the man who had stolen his life.

"Put him on speaker," Michael commanded.

A crisp, heavily accented voice filled the room. "Mr. DeLuca. The Authority has reviewed the documentation. The evidence of gross financial fraud and falsified adoption records is overwhelming. As the verified biological father of the sole beneficiary, you are hereby granted immediate, uncontested executive control over the Elena Trust."

"Thank you," Michael replied, his voice deadly and perfectly controlled. "I have a specific directive for those funds. I want the entire two billion dollars liquidated from the DeLuca Holding Company’s overarching accounts immediately. Sever all ties. Freeze all assets connected to Anthony DeLuca."

"Understood, Mr. DeLuca. The transfer will be executed within the hour. The DeLuca corporate accounts will be drained."

Michael ended the call. The execution order had been given. The sword had fallen.
