Chapter 9

The sheer magnitude of his parents' deception hung heavily in the air of the penthouse. They hadn't just stolen the woman he loved; they had systematically manipulated the entire trajectory of his life to secure control over an invisible fortune. The cold, unbothered way Carmen had watched Renee scrub dishes suddenly made terrifying sense. To them, the child wasn't a granddaughter. She was a hijacked bank account.

Michael paced the length of the living room, his polished dress shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. He ran a hand through his thick dark brown hair, his mind operating at a terrifying, tactical speed.

"If Anthony controls the overarching family trusts, he controls the legal mechanisms tying Renee’s assets to the DeLuca holding company," Michael reasoned aloud, his intense eyes locking onto his lawyer. "How do we sever it, David?"

"We file for an immediate dissolution of the family charter based on gross financial fraud," David replied, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "With the DNA test proving you are her biological father, the original adoption paperwork is legally fraudulent. Anthony and Carmen falsified state documents. If we bring this to a federal judge, we can freeze all of Anthony's assets and strip him of his board seat."

"Do it," Michael commanded, his voice ruthless and unyielding. "Draft the injunction. I want it filed the second the courthouses open on Monday."

"Michael," Marcus interrupted, his deep voice cautious. He stepped away from the window, holding out his digital security tablet. "Anthony is already making his move."

Michael stopped pacing and took the tablet. On the screen was a live feed from the penthouse lobby security cameras. Three black SUVs had aggressively pulled up to the front entrance of the high-rise. A dozen men in dark suits piled out, led by a man Michael recognized instantly: Victor Vance, Anthony’s personal head of security and a known corporate enforcer.

"They aren't waiting for Monday," Marcus stated, checking his sidearm. "Anthony knows if you file that DNA report, he goes to prison for fraud. He sent a retrieval team."

David slammed his laptop shut, his face paling. "Michael, if Anthony claims you are having a mental breakdown, he can use his status as the family patriarch to file an emergency custody order. He is coming to take the girl back by force."

Michael’s expression hardened into a mask of pure, absolute outrage. The protective presence he carried transformed into an aura of lethal danger. He looked toward the hallway leading to Renee’s bedroom. They had taken Elena from him. They had stolen six years of his daughter's life. He would burn the entire city of Chicago to the ground before he let them touch her again.

"Marcus," Michael said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadened whisper. "Lock down the elevators. Arm the internal security doors."

"They have breach tools, Michael," Marcus warned. "They will get through the lobby doors in five minutes."

"Let them try," Michael replied, unbuttoning his gray vest. He walked toward the hidden biometric safe in his office wall. "No one takes my daughter."
