Chapter 8

The sprawling downtown penthouse was a fortress of modern glass and steel, hovering high above the glittering Chicago skyline. The private elevator doors slid open, and Michael stepped into the massive, warmly lit foyer, carrying a deeply sleeping Renee in his arms. He bypassed the luxurious living room and walked straight down the hallway to her bedroom, a beautifully decorated space filled with soft pinks and creams.

Michael gently laid her down on the plush mattress. He carefully untied the pale-blue shoes from her tiny feet and pulled a heavy, warm duvet over her fragile body. He stood by the bed for a long moment, watching her chest rise and fall with natural, peaceful breathing. The anger inside him was a raging inferno, but looking at his biological daughter, he felt an overwhelming sense of profound, protective duty.

He quietly closed the bedroom door and walked back out into the main living area.

Marcus was already standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, checking the perimeter security feeds on a digital tablet. Sitting on one of the white leather sofas was David, Michael’s ruthless lead attorney. David wore a rumpled gray suit, having rushed over in the middle of the night. His laptop was open on the glass coffee table, illuminated by the city lights outside.

"I read the scans of the documents you sent from the car," David said immediately, adjusting his glasses. His voice was grim, highly professional, and devoid of holiday cheer. "The DNA test is ironclad, Michael. The confession letter from the agency director is damning. But there is a massive complication."

Michael walked over to a crystal decanter, pouring himself three fingers of scotch. He didn't drink it; he just stared at the amber liquid. "Explain the complication, David. I want my parents in a federal prison by New Year's Eve."

"It’s not about criminal charges," David replied, pulling up a complex financial flowchart on his screen. "It’s about the Elena trust. When Elena died three years ago, a massive offshore trust fund was triggered. I found the hidden filings buried in the corporate archives. Elena’s family came from old European money, money she ran away from to be an artist. When she died, that money defaulted to her only living heir."

Michael frowned, his sharp features tightening in confusion. He set the glass down. "Renee."

"Exactly," David nodded. "Renee is the sole beneficiary of a trust worth nearly two billion dollars. But because Renee was an orphan in the eyes of the law, the money was placed in a holding pattern."

Marcus looked up from his security tablet, his military-trained mind instantly catching the threat. "Anthony and Carmen didn't bring the girl back to Michael out of guilt. They didn't orchestrate the adoption to protect the bloodline."

"They did it to control the money," Michael deduced, the realization hitting him with sickening clarity. "Because I am the CEO, my assets are heavily monitored by the board. But Anthony retains control of my personal family trusts. By making me adopt Renee, Anthony legally positioned himself as the grand-patriarch overseer of her estate."

"They have been skimming hundreds of millions from your daughter's trust for three years to fund their failing offshore ventures," David confirmed quietly. "And Michael... Anthony knows you found out. He won't just let you walk away with his golden goose."
