Chapter 15

Seven years after the birthday party, Lulu was fourteen.

She no longer hated birthdays.

She hated large birthday parties.

That was different.

Her fourteenth was held in Grace’s backyard with pizza, three friends, Dominic, and one crooked homemade cake.

No photographer.

No crown unless she wanted one.

She did not.

Marcella was out of the family forever.

Her sentence, restitution, and no-contact order were settled.

Dominic had completed prison time and remained under supervision.

The Carvelli businesses tied to crime had been dismantled, sold, or placed under court oversight.

Natalia’s trust was clean.

Grace remained Lulu’s standby guardian on paper but had become something more ordinary and more important:

Someone who showed up without trying to own the room.

After cake, Grace brought out a sealed envelope.

Natalia’s final letter.

The one addressed to Lulu alone.

The court had allowed Lulu access at fourteen.

No one could force her to read it.

Dominic stood by the porch steps, hands in his pockets.

Grace held the envelope flat on her palm.

“This is yours.”

Lulu looked at it.

“Do you know what it says?”

“No.”

She looked at Dominic.

“Do you?”

“No.”

“Do you want to?”

He answered honestly.

“Yes.”

“Are you going to ask?”

“No.”

That mattered.

Everything else had reached an answer.

Marcella’s lie had been exposed.

Natalia’s real choice was restored.

Lulu learned she had not been unwanted.

Dominic faced consequences for his violence and his crimes.

The trust was protected.

The mansion no longer used Lulu’s smile as currency.

Only one emotional question remained open.

Whether Lulu was ready to hear, in her mother’s own words, why Natalia believed love needed a backup plan.

Not whether Natalia loved her.

That had been proven.

Not whether Dominic loved her.

That had been proven too.

The question was whether Lulu wanted the full truth of being loved by two parents, one careful enough to prepare and one dangerous enough to make preparation necessary.

Lulu took the envelope.

Held it against her chest.

Then placed it beside the cake.

“Not tonight.”

Grace nodded.

Dominic nodded too.

No one touched it again.

Later, when Lulu went back inside for more frosting, Dominic looked at the envelope and then away.

For once, he did not try to open what did not belong to him.

Natalia had chosen protection.

Marcella had tried to turn that choice into a weapon.

May you like

Lulu, finally, got to turn it back into a door.

And she alone would decide when to open it.
