Chapter 4

Detective Hannah Vale recovered Marcella’s phone under warrant.

The first useful evidence was not a confession.

It was a photograph.

A photo of Lulu’s birthday crown on Marcella’s vanity, taken two hours before the party.

Beside it was a printed checklist:

Crown.

Photographer.

Cake.

Statement draft.

Guardian packet.

Emergency counsel.

Hannah circled the last three items.

Statement draft.

Guardian packet.

Emergency counsel.

The second clue was an email Marcella sent to a public-relations adviser that morning.

Need birthday images showing child emotional condition if situation escalates. Father response may be volatile.

The adviser replied:

Do not create risk for a child.

Marcella answered:

Risk already exists. We are documenting.

The third clue was a draft petition found on her laptop.

It was prepared before the party.

Title:

Emergency Petition for Temporary Protective Guardianship of Minor Child.

The petition described an incident that had not happened yet.

A violent outburst by Dominic during Lulu’s birthday party.

A child injured amid chaos.

Marcella assaulted while trying to protect the child.

Evidence of Dominic’s inability to control himself.

The document did not say Marcella slapped Lulu.

Because in Marcella’s planned version, that part would disappear.

She controlled the photographer.

She controlled party staff.

She controlled which short clips would circulate first.

What she had not controlled was Dominic calling police immediately and turning over the full ballroom footage.

Hannah asked Dominic:

“Would you normally call police for a family matter?”

Dominic answered:

“No.”

“Why did you this time?”

He looked through the glass at Lulu holding Grace’s hand.

“Because she was watching.”

The detective did not praise him.

That would have been too easy.

She simply wrote it down.
