Chapter 3

Natalia had left more than a will.
Dominic learned that the morning after the birthday party.
Her former law partner, Grace Mercer, arrived at the police station with a sealed file and a court order authorizing disclosure to investigators.
Dominic knew Grace.
He had disliked her for years.
Now he understood why.
Grace had been Natalia’s chosen emergency contact outside the Carvelli family.
Dominic stared at the file.
“What is that?”
Grace answered:
“Natalia’s child-safety packet.”
His voice lowered.
“For Lulu?”
“Yes.”
“And I never saw it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Grace looked at him without flinching.
“Because Natalia was afraid you would treat it as betrayal instead of protection.”
That sentence nearly ended the conversation.
Dominic’s lawyer touched his arm.
Dominic sat down.
The packet contained:
A standby guardian nomination.
A letter to family court.
A trust instruction.
A list of adults Natalia did not want controlling Lulu’s care.
And a sealed letter for Lulu when she was old enough.
The standby guardian was not Marcella.
It was Grace.
Not because Natalia wanted to replace Dominic automatically.
Because the nomination only activated if Dominic became incarcerated, incapacitated, or unable to provide a home separated from criminal influence.
Natalia had written:
Dominic loves our daughter. Love is not the question. Safety is.
Dominic read that line three times.
Then Grace turned to another page.
Natalia had specifically warned:
Marcella Carvelli should not be appointed guardian, trustee, or custodial decision-maker. She treats children as symbols and family roles as property.
Dominic looked up.
“Marcella knew?”
Grace said:
“She knew enough.”
After Natalia’s death, Grace attempted to lodge the packet with the family court and send Dominic notice through his household counsel.
The notice was acknowledged electronically.
Dominic never received it.
The acknowledgment came from an office account Marcella controlled during the weeks after Natalia’s funeral.

Marcella had not invented Natalia’s “choice.”
She had stolen it, twisted it, and hidden the part where Natalia chose against her.
