Chapter 9

The independent trustee found the financial reason Marcella needed guardianship fast.
She had borrowed against anticipated consulting fees from Carvelli charity events and household management contracts.
Those contracts were not guaranteed.
Several depended on her continuing to control Lulu’s public appearances for the Natalia Carvelli Children’s Initiative, a foundation created after Natalia’s death.
Donor money was not stolen outright.
The truth was subtler.
Marcella had routed event-planning fees, image-rights licensing, and “family legacy consulting” through companies she controlled.
Lulu’s birthday portraits were part of the donor packet.
A smiling orphaned daughter.
A grieving father.
A glamorous aunt preserving the dead mother’s legacy.
That image made money move.
Natalia’s actual documents threatened to end the whole arrangement.
If Grace took oversight, Marcella lost access.
If Dominic removed her quietly, she could sue.
If Dominic assaulted her publicly and Lulu appeared injured in the chaos, Marcella could petition as the stable adult and freeze everyone else out long enough to negotiate.
Then the trustee found a forged page.
It appeared to be part of Natalia’s standby guardian packet.
It named Marcella as “preferred family guardian for cultural continuity.”
The signature was a scan from another document.
The wording was wrong.
Natalia never wrote like that.
Grace almost laughed when she saw the phrase.
“Cultural continuity?”
Dominic asked:
“She didn’t write that?”
“Natalia would rather haunt a courthouse than write that.”
Forensic review confirmed alteration.

Marcella had taken a real safety plan and attached a fake page placing herself inside it.
That was the last clue before the full picture became clear.
