Chapter 21 - Lily Remembers Less

Lily’s memories changed faster.
At three, basement was huge.
At five, fragments.
“Dark room.”
“Bucket.”
“Drew carried me.”
By six, she sometimes asked:
“Did that really happen?”
We answered carefully.
“Yes, there was a basement room where Mom sometimes locked you and Drew.”
No embellishment.
No:
You almost starved.
Not true.
No:
Your mother tortured you.
Adult label.
Then:
“You were very little.”
She asked:
“Why Mom?”
“Mom was using punishment that was unsafe and wrong.”
“Does she still?”
“No. She isn’t allowed to care for you alone.”
“Can she later?”
“Adults will decide based on safety, and you can tell us how you feel.”
Good.
She did not need to preserve trauma to justify boundaries.
If memory faded, safety still stood on records and adult responsibility.
Children should not have to remember perfectly to keep protections.
May you like
That mattered.
