Chapter 26 - The Locked Door

Three years after Drew crawled to my house, he was nine.

Lily was six.

We were staying at a rented lake cabin.

First vacation that felt ordinary.

The bedroom doors had old-fashioned push locks.

Lily accidentally locked herself in bathroom.

Then panicked.

“Peter!”

I ran.

“Turn little knob.”

“I can’t!”

Drew arrived behind me.

His face went white.

Old fear.

I said:

“Drew, step back.”

“I can help.”

“I know. I’ve got it.”

He stepped back.

Hard for him.

I talked Lily through turning the lock.

It opened.

She came out crying.

I hugged her.

Drew stood six feet away.

Hands clenched.

I looked.

“You okay?”

He nodded too fast.

Then:

“Door opened.”

“Yes.”

“Because she could.”

“Yes.”

He looked at bathroom.

Then walked over.

Closed door.

Locked it from inside.

Unlocked.

Opened.

Again.

Lock.

Unlock.

Open.

He laughed once.

“Stupid.”

Maybe.

Then Lily pushed past.

“My turn.”

They spent five minutes locking and unlocking door until I told them to stop because we were not paying for a broken cabin knob.

That was the climax.

A lock becoming mechanism again.

Not punishment.

Not threat.

May you like

A thing that opens.
