Chapter 10 - The inheritance theft

By Chapter 10, there was no serious uncertainty left about the central mechanism.
Elena had not changed Sophie’s beneficiary status.
She had not created a secret trust amendment.
She had not taken control of the $7.4 million principal.
She exploited the trust’s reimbursement system.
The scheme worked in six steps.
First:
Elena remained an authorized family paperwork coordinator after Claire’s death.
That allowed her to gather legitimate invoices and prepare reimbursement packets.
Second:
She created inflated or entirely false Sophie-related expenses.
Some invoices were fabricated.
Others were real invoices altered upward.
Some described expenses belonging to adults as if they were for Sophie.
Third:
She attached forged certifications bearing my signature.
Those told Northbridge I had already paid the expense and was requesting reimbursement.
Fourth:
She submitted a forged routing instruction moving selected payments from the real Carter Family Services account to a similarly named account she controlled.
Fifth:
She used ordinary family-office coding and Claire’s illness-era paperwork volume to make the reimbursements look routine.
Sixth:
When Claire began questioning B-41, Elena issued partial corrections and credits to reduce attention while continuing other requests.
Total questionable reimbursements reviewed:
$872,000.
After removing:
Legitimate Sophie expenses.
Documentation errors without loss.
Elena’s genuine advances.
Forensic accountants identified approximately:
$612,000
in funds that improperly benefited Elena or entities she controlled.
Could more emerge?
Possibly.
But no one called every unclear dollar stolen.
Then Vanessa.
Did she receive trust money?
No evidence.
Did Elena pay her?
No.
Vanessa’s involvement was different.
She knew Claire had hidden records.
Elena encouraged her to destroy the teddy bear by feeding her jealousy.
Messages:
Claire built that bear into a shrine.
If Adrian finds what she hid, you’ll spend your marriage competing with a dead woman.
Vanessa replied:
I already do.
Then:
Get rid of it.
Vanessa did.
She had no idea the amount stolen.
She knew Elena feared the evidence.
That created potential obstruction issues once she intentionally tried to destroy it.
But whether she knew a formal investigation existed at that moment mattered.
The strongest criminal charge against her remained child battery.
Elena was the financial architect.
Claire had been right:

The person stealing from Sophie was someone I loved.
My sister.
