Chapter 4 - Vanessa knew about the bear

Vanessa was released after police interviewed her about Sophie’s treatment.
Child-related allegations were straightforward.
She admitted pulling Sophie by the hair?
No.
She said she grabbed the back of Sophie’s cardigan and accidentally caught hair.
I had seen more than that.
Sophie’s scalp showed tenderness but no laceration.
Pediatrician documented.
Vanessa also admitted throwing the teddy bear away.
Why?
She said:
“I was tired of Claire being in every room.”
That sounded honest.
Ugly.
But honest.
Then why rip the seam?
“Elena told me Claire had hidden private recordings in Sophie’s things.”
There.
“When?”
“Months ago.”
“What exactly did Elena say?”
“That Claire recorded everyone while she was sick because medication made her paranoid.”
False.
Claire’s medical records showed no psychosis.
Strong pain medication at times.
No paranoia diagnosis.
Vanessa said Elena warned:
“If Adrian hears old accusations, he’ll never move forward.”
Vanessa wanted Claire’s memory reduced in the house.
Photographs moved.
Clothes donated.
Sophie resisted.
The teddy bear became symbolic.
Vanessa decided to throw it away.
When she felt something hard inside:
She tore the seam.
Saw USB.
Panicked.
Why not give it to me?
“Because I thought it was another message from Claire about me.”
“Had Claire ever recorded anything about you?”
“No.”
“Then why fear it?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because Elena said Claire didn’t trust the woman you married after her.”
But Claire died before I met Vanessa romantically.
They had met socially twice.
That story made no chronological sense.
Vanessa had chosen not to notice.
Then Sophie.
Why pull her hair?
Vanessa said:
“She bit my hand.”
Sophie’s interview:
She grabbed the bear from trash.
Vanessa grabbed her hair.
Sophie scratched Vanessa.
Possible defensive response.
No evidence Sophie bit.
Prosecutors later charged Vanessa with misdemeanor child battery/endangerment.
No felony torture.

No dramatic prison sentence yet.
Her role in the financial scheme remained uncertain.
