Chapter 23 - Claire’s handwriting

One evening Sophie asked:
“Can Mommy write more notes?”
“No.”
“Because she died?”
“Yes.”
She looked at the bear.
Then:
“I forget her voice sometimes.”
That hurt.
We had recordings.
Not the evidence videos.
Family videos.
Claire laughing.
Reading.
Singing badly.
We watched one.
Sophie smiled.
“She sings bad.”
“She did.”
“Did you tell her?”
“Constantly.”
Then we created no memorial ritual.
No shrine.
Just a folder Sophie could access with me when she wanted.
Claire became more than:
The dead woman who caught theft.
She had liked:
Lemon cake.
Rainstorms.
Mystery novels.
Terrible jazz.
May you like
She hated folding laundry.
Sophie needed that.
