Chapter 1 - The Cage Behind the Mansion

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Daddy, help me!”
Adrian stopped in the open patio doorway.
For one impossible second, his mind refused to understand what his eyes were seeing.
Noah.
Three years old.
Inside a rusted dog cage.
The boy sat curled against the bars with one shoe missing and dirt streaked across his favorite white sweater.
A metal bowl of dry dog food rested beside him.
Vanessa stood nearby in an expensive silk dress as though nothing unusual had happened.
Adrian moved.
Fast.
“Noah!”
Vanessa stepped in front of him.
“He needs to learn consequences.”
Adrian pushed past her. She stumbled onto the grass.
“He’s three!”
“He threw his lunch.”
“So you put him in a cage?”
“That naughty little boy needed to be taught a lesson.”
Adrian dropped beside the cage.
The latch had jammed.
He pulled.
Nothing.
Again.
Metal scraped against his hand, but he barely noticed.
Then—
CLANK.
The door opened.
Noah launched himself forward.
Adrian caught him.
The child trembled uncontrollably against his chest.
“I’ve got you.”
Noah buried his face in Adrian’s shoulder.
“She said bad children have to eat out here.”
Adrian slowly looked at Vanessa.
His anger became frighteningly quiet.
“You are not his mother.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
She had expected shouting.
Maybe threats.
Not that sentence.
Adrian carried Noah away from the cage.
Then he saw something half-submerged in the mud.
A blue teddy bear.
Noah’s favorite.
“Teddy…”
Adrian picked it up.
One side had been ripped open.
One plastic eye was missing.
The remaining eye looked wrong.
Too dark.
Too smooth.
Adrian touched it.
A tiny lens.
His heartbeat changed.
A hidden camera.
He looked at Vanessa.
Her face drained of color.
She lunged toward him.
“Give that to me.”
Adrian stepped backward.
“Why?”
“It belongs to Noah.”
“So does the cage?”
“Adrian—”
He turned the teddy over.
A tiny memory-card slot was hidden beneath the fabric.
Vanessa reached again.
“Give it to me right now!”
Adrian moved Noah behind him.
Then he looked at the woman he had planned to marry in six weeks.
“What’s on this camera?”
Vanessa stopped.
And the fear in her eyes gave him an answer before she ever spoke.

👉 Vanessa wasn’t shocked that Noah’s teddy bear contained a camera—she was terrified that Adrian had found it before she could.
