Chapter 9 - The Night Vanessa Searched the Nursery

Ethan accessed the teddy’s cloud backup.
Not everything had synced.
But older clips remained.
Adrian, Rebecca, and Ethan watched together.
Three weeks earlier.
2:14 a.m.
Vanessa entered Noah’s nursery.
Alone.
She turned on a small lamp.
Then began searching.
Drawers.
Toy baskets.
Closet.
Finally, she picked up the blue teddy.
She squeezed its face.
Checked both eyes.
Then Noah stirred.
Vanessa put it down.
“Go back to sleep.”
Noah whispered—
“Mommy bear.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
She looked at the teddy again.
Then whispered to herself—
“Where did Claire put it?”
Adrian stopped the footage.
“She knew Claire installed the camera.”
Ethan nodded.
“But how?”
Next clip.
Vanessa was on the phone.
“You said the camera was in the teddy.”
Pause.
“I’ve checked it.”
Pause.
“No, I can’t rip it open while Adrian’s here.”
The caller spoke too softly to identify.
Vanessa replied—
“If that recording exists, we’re both finished.”
Rebecca leaned forward.
“What recording?”
Nobody knew.
Ethan searched older cloud files.
Most were ordinary.
Noah sleeping.
Claire singing to him when he was a baby.
Adrian almost stopped there.
Claire sat in the rocking chair holding infant Noah.
Her face thinner from illness.
Still smiling.
He had never seen that clip.
Ethan looked at him.
“We can stop.”
“No.”
Adrian swallowed.
“Keep going.”
Sixteen months earlier.
Just weeks after Claire died.
Vanessa entered the nursery.
At that time, she and Adrian were not dating.
She had come to deliver foundation documents.
At least that was what Adrian remembered.
The camera captured her standing beside Noah’s crib with Miles Warren.
Adrian froze.
Why was Warren in his home sixteen months ago?
He had supposedly met the man only three months earlier.
Vanessa whispered—
“Claire found the invoices.”
Warren replied—
“She never proved anything.”
“She told Ethan.”
“Maybe.”
“And Adrian?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked toward the crib.
“What happens to the trust now?”
Warren answered—
“Nothing until someone requests a review.”
“And if Adrian doesn’t?”
“He won’t.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“You’re sure?”
Warren laughed.
“He signs what lawyers put in front of him.”
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
This was older.
Far older than he realized.
Then Vanessa said—
“We need Lucas inside first.”
The camera had recorded the beginning of the conspiracy before Adrian and Vanessa ever became a couple.
Rebecca whispered—
“She didn’t fall in love with you and discover the trust.”
Adrian stared at Vanessa’s image.
“No.”
“She discovered the trust.”
He finished the sentence himself.
“Then came for me.”
