Chapter 17 - The Blue Teddy Goes to Therapy

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Noah refused therapy the first time.
He hid behind Adrian’s leg.
“No.”
The therapist, Dr. Emily Ross, smiled.
“Okay.”
No pressure.
No pulling.
No bribery.
She sat on the floor and began building a tower.
Noah watched.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Then his blue teddy appeared around Adrian’s leg.
Dr. Ross looked at the bear.
“Does he want to build?”
Noah whispered—
“Maybe.”
The teddy attended the entire session.
Three weeks later, Noah spoke about the cage.
Not much.
“Dark.”
“Cold.”
“Vanessa mad.”
Then—
“Daddy came.”
Dr. Ross looked toward Adrian through the observation glass.
Noah’s memory contained fear.
But it also contained rescue.
That mattered.
At home, Adrian changed routines.
Fewer overnight trips.
Clear caregivers.
No one could discipline Noah privately without written family guidelines.
Not because Adrian wanted surveillance everywhere.
The opposite.
He wanted transparency so secret cameras were unnecessary.
Noah began sleeping through the night.
His appetite returned.
At preschool, he stopped clinging to the door.
One afternoon he drew a picture.
Adrian.
Noah.
Claire.
And a blue bear.
Vanessa was not there.
Neither was the cage.
“Who’s that?”
Adrian pointed to a stick figure with long hair.
“Mommy.”
Adrian swallowed.
“You remember her?”
Noah shook his head.
“Teddy does.”
Adrian smiled sadly.
In a way, he was right.
The bear held old videos of Claire.
Adrian asked Ethan to preserve them separately.
Not the abuse footage.
Claire.
Her songs.
Her laughter.
Her holding Noah.
One evening Adrian showed Noah a clip.
Claire rocked him as an infant.
“You were tiny.”
Noah watched.
“Mommy loves me?”
“Yes.”
“Even when I cry?”
Adrian’s heart tightened.
“Especially then.”
Noah leaned into him.
They watched another.
Claire sneezed.
Baby Noah laughed.
Three-year-old Noah laughed too.
For a moment, past and present met without pain.
Then Rebecca called.
Sentencing dates had been scheduled.
Vanessa’s attorney wanted Adrian to provide a victim-impact statement.
He agreed.
Not because he wanted the harshest possible outcome.
Because the court needed to understand what cruelty to a small child looked like after the scene ended.
Nightmares.
Food anxiety.
Fear of being “bad.”
Silence.
Adrian knew exactly what he would say.

👉 Vanessa’s punishment would be decided in court—but Adrian wanted the judge to understand that Noah had been carrying the sentence long before she ever did.
