Chapter 15 - Vanessa Finally Tells the Truth

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Vanessa sat across from investigators.
Her attorney beside her.
No silk dress.
No diamonds.
No confidence.
Rebecca received the transcript later.
Adrian read it alone.
Question:
Why Noah?
Vanessa answered—
“At first? Money.”
No elaborate excuse.
No misunderstanding.
Money.
Warren introduced BrightPath.
Mercer explained trust reimbursements.
Vanessa knew Adrian socially.
She knew Claire was ill.
She learned Noah had inherited substantial assets.
Then Claire confronted them.
The scheme paused.
After Claire died, Vanessa approached Adrian slowly.
Question:
Did you intend to marry Adrian from the beginning?
Vanessa paused.
“Yes.”
Question:
Did you love him?
Another pause.
“Eventually.”
Adrian stopped reading.
That answer hurt more than “no.”
Eventually.
Somewhere between calculation and betrayal, real emotion may have appeared.
It changed nothing.
Question:
Why were you cruel to Noah?
Vanessa cried.
“I resented him.”
Why?
“Because every time Adrian looked at Noah, Claire was in the room.”
That was the truth beneath everything.
Noah had Claire’s eyes.
Claire’s smile.
Claire’s place in Adrian’s heart.
Vanessa couldn’t defeat a dead woman.
So she punished the child who kept her present.
Question:
Why the cage?
“He threw food.”
“And?”
“I lost my temper.”
“Did Warren order it?”
“No.”
“Mercer?”
“No.”
“So that was you?”
“Yes.”
“Why put dog food beside him?”
Long silence.
“I wanted to humiliate him.”
Adrian closed the transcript.
He couldn’t read more.
There was nothing complicated about that part.
Fraud could have layers.
Abuse did not need one.
She wanted a frightened three-year-old to feel small.
Then he forced himself to continue.
Question:
Why were you searching for the teddy camera?
Vanessa answered—
“Warren remembered Claire mentioning it.”
They feared old recordings.
Especially the one showing Vanessa and Warren discussing the trust shortly after Claire died.
Question:
Why not destroy the teddy earlier?
“Noah never let it go.”
That almost made Adrian smile.
His son’s attachment to a stuffed bear had protected the evidence.
The transcript ended with Vanessa saying—
“I know saying I loved Adrian doesn’t help me.”
The investigator replied—
“No.”
Vanessa:
“I know.”
Adrian folded the pages.
No triumph.
Just clarity.
Then Noah walked into the study.
“Story?”
Adrian looked at him.
Bedtime.
“Yes.”
Noah climbed onto his lap.
He chose the same book Claire used to read.
Halfway through, he asked—
“Vanessa coming back?”
Adrian closed the book.
“No.”
“Ever?”
“Not to live with us.”
Noah considered that.
Then whispered—
“Good.”
One word.
No hesitation.
Adrian finally understood how unsafe his son had felt.
