Chapter 7 - The Wedding Was Part of the Plan

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The wedding was six weeks away.

Adrian canceled it in six minutes.

Vanessa learned through her planner.

She stormed into the mansion’s front hall.

“You canceled our wedding?”

Adrian stood halfway down the staircase.

“No.”

She stared.

“You just said—”

“I canceled my wedding.”

His voice remained calm.

“You were never going to have one.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You’re throwing away two years because your brother-in-law hates me?”

“Ethan isn’t the reason.”

Adrian descended.

“Noah is.”

She folded her arms.

“I was disciplining him.”

“You put him in a dog cage.”

“He was safe.”

“From what?”

Silence.

“Himself?”

Vanessa looked away.

Adrian continued.

“You manufactured behavioral reports.”

“Miles diagnosed him.”

“Miles billed a company you own.”

Her expression shifted.

“Business arrangements are not crimes.”

“For forged treatment?”

“I never forged anything.”

Rebecca entered behind Adrian.

“Then Lucas Grant has a serious problem.”

Vanessa froze.

Adrian saw it.

“You know.”

“I know Lucas is your lawyer.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You know he disappeared.”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Rebecca explained that Lucas’s office had turned over electronic records.

The final estate-plan draft gave Vanessa extraordinary authority after marriage.

It also recommended Warren Behavioral Solutions as the preferred developmental provider.

Adrian looked at her.

“You weren’t marrying me.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Oh, please.”

“You were marrying access.”

“You think everything is about your money.”

“No.”

He pointed upstairs.

“This was about his.”

Vanessa finally lost control.

“Do you know what your life became after Claire died?”

Adrian stared.

“A shrine.”

“What?”

“Claire’s photographs. Claire’s trust. Claire’s rules. Claire’s brother. Claire’s son—”

She stopped.

Too late.

Adrian’s face changed.

“Claire’s son?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“You know what I meant.”

“No.”

His voice became quieter.

“He is my son.”

Vanessa looked away.

That one phrase explained more than any financial document.

She had never seen Noah as a child she was joining.

She saw him as Claire’s permanent presence.

A reminder.

An obstacle.

A trust account.

Adrian shook his head.

“You resented a three-year-old for having a dead mother.”

Vanessa whispered—

“You never looked at me the way you looked at her.”

There it was.

Jealousy beneath greed.

Greed beneath jealousy.

Neither excused anything.

Then Vanessa’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Panic.

Adrian noticed.

“Who?”

“No one.”

She declined it.

The phone rang again.

Rebecca saw the caller name.

LUCAS.

Vanessa turned to leave.

Adrian didn’t stop her.

Rebecca did something better.

She called law enforcement.

Because Lucas Grant, the missing lawyer, had apparently decided Vanessa was still the person he trusted enough to call.
