Chapter 6 - Before Claire Died

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Ethan arrived that afternoon.

He carried Claire’s letter in a plastic sleeve.

Adrian recognized her handwriting instantly.

It hurt.

Ethan placed it on the table.

“You read it.”

Adrian did.

Claire wrote about hospital-foundation meetings.

Vanessa volunteered frequently.

Too frequently.

She asked about Noah.

About Adrian.

About the Bennett family trust.

At first Claire thought she was merely nosy.

Then Vanessa asked a trust attorney at a fundraiser whether a surviving parent could change developmental-benefit distributions after the beneficiary’s mother died.

Claire found it strange enough to write down.

Then came another paragraph.

Vanessa knows Adrian is lonely even when he’s surrounded by people. She knows how to flatter men who think they can’t be flattered.

Adrian stopped.

Ethan remained quiet.

The final paragraph was worse.

If I’m wrong, good.

If I’m right, promise me you’ll watch Noah before you watch Adrian.

Because Adrian can protect himself.

Noah can’t.

Adrian folded the letter.

For a long time, neither man spoke.

Then Adrian said—

“She knew me too well.”

Ethan nodded.

Rebecca entered with new bank records.

The mood changed immediately.

“We traced Silver Oak.”

Vanessa’s shell company had not existed three months.

It existed seventeen months.

One month after Claire died.

Adrian stared.

Vanessa created the company before she and Adrian officially began dating.

Its business purpose:

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CONSULTING.

Ethan whispered—

“Jesus.”

Then Rebecca found the first deposit.

$75,000.

Sender:

Warren Family Services.

Miles Warren.

The behavioral consultant.

Their relationship predated Noah’s “problems.”

Rebecca checked corporate emails.

Vanessa and Warren had been discussing Noah’s trust for over a year.

One message:

VANESSA:

He still won’t let anyone touch Claire’s structure.

WARREN:

Then wait until you’re inside the family.

Another:

VANESSA:

Marriage changes leverage.

WARREN:

Only if the child remains a problem.

Adrian’s face went cold.

Noah had become “a problem” because they needed him to be one.

Then Ethan noticed a name copied on one old message.

LUCAS GRANT.

Adrian frowned.

“My estate lawyer.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Current estate lawyer?”

“Yes.”

The man handling Adrian’s new will.

And his prenup with Vanessa.

Rebecca immediately requested copies of every draft.

One provision stood out.

If Adrian became medically incapacitated after marriage, Vanessa would become temporary household guardian for Noah pending court review.

Another provision gave her authority to approve trust-reimbursable care.

Adrian stared at his own signature.

He had signed a preliminary acknowledgment.

Not the final prenup.

But enough to show Lucas had been steering the language.

“Call him.”

Lucas did not answer.

His assistant said he had left the office unexpectedly.

Then Rebecca opened the metadata on the document.

The guardianship provision had not been drafted by Lucas.

It had been imported from a document authored by—

MILES WARREN.

👉 Vanessa’s behavioral consultant hadn’t merely been falsifying Noah’s problems—he had helped write himself into the legal plan that would let Vanessa control Noah’s care after the wedding.
