Chapter 13 - Claire Speaks

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Claire looked exhausted in the video.

But her voice was steady.

“Vanessa Cole knows I’m investigating her.”

Adrian’s hands tightened.

Claire continued.

“She approached me after the hospital-foundation meeting today.”

She described Vanessa cornering her near the parking garage.

Vanessa accused Claire of trying to ruin “a legitimate business opportunity.”

Claire asked why Vanessa cared.

Vanessa replied—

“Because people like Adrian always control everything.”

Adrian looked at Ethan.

Neither spoke.

Claire continued.

“I told her Noah’s trust is not Adrian’s money.”

That sentence mattered.

Vanessa apparently laughed.

Then said—

“It will be somebody’s money.”

Claire stared into the camera.

“That is the sentence I cannot get out of my head.”

The recording included no crime.

No threat.

But it proved Vanessa’s interest existed before Claire died.

Then Claire said something Adrian didn’t expect.

“I don’t think Vanessa hates Noah.”

Pause.

“I think that’s worse.”

Adrian frowned.

Claire continued.

“I think she doesn’t see him at all.”

To Vanessa, Noah was a beneficiary.

A number.

A child whose emotional struggles could generate reimbursable treatment.

Claire ended with:

“If I’m wrong, destroy this and tease me forever.”

Then she smiled.

“If I’m right, protect him.”

The screen went black.

Adrian sat there.

Ethan finally whispered—

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“She tried.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t know.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

Ethan seemed to understand what Adrian was doing to himself.

“Don’t.”

“Don’t what?”

“Turn Claire being observant into proof you failed her.”

Adrian gave a humorless laugh.

“I was living in the same house.”

“And grieving before she even died.”

That landed.

Claire had been sick for almost a year.

Adrian spent that year trying to save her.

Appointments.

Specialists.

Hospitals.

Noah.

Work.

He trusted professionals with paperwork because he had no capacity left.

That trust had been exploited.

Responsibility mattered.

But shame would not protect Noah now.

Action would.

Rebecca received a message from prosecutors.

Vanessa had requested an interview.

She wanted to negotiate.

“What does she have to offer?”

Adrian asked.

“Warren.”

“We already have Warren.”

“Mercer.”

“We have him too.”

Rebecca read farther.

Then looked up.

“She says there’s another victim.”

Adrian froze.

“What victim?”

“Another child trust.”

According to Vanessa, Noah was not the first family BrightPath targeted.

There had been a pilot case.

A six-year-old girl in Connecticut.

Large inheritance.

Sudden behavioral diagnosis.

Expensive residential placement.

The family believed the program helped.

Vanessa claimed it had been manipulated too.

Adrian looked at Claire’s frozen image on the screen.

The scheme was bigger than Noah.

Much bigger.

👉 Noah’s camera had exposed one child’s abuse—but Vanessa had just admitted the same business model may already have been used against another family.
