Chapter 11 - Rachel
Rachel arrived at the hospital almost two hours after the girls.
She had been in another city for work.
A child-services investigator called her.
She drove until an officer told her to stop because she was crying too hard to drive safely.
A colleague brought her the rest of the way.
She reached Olivia’s room.
Then stopped at the door.
“Can I touch her?”
The nurse nodded.
Rachel sat beside the bed.
Olivia opened her eyes.
“Mommy.”
Rachel broke.
Emma climbed into her lap from the other side.
For several minutes, nobody asked legal questions.
Good.
Then Rachel looked at Detective Kim.
“I told the court something was wrong.”
That statement required examination too.
