Chapter 26 - The Shoe

A year later, Emma outgrew the sneakers.
Rachel found the loose insole while sorting donations.
She stopped.
Underneath:
nothing.
Of course.
The syringe was long gone into evidence.
The old papers were preserved elsewhere.
Just a shoe.
Rachel almost kept it.
Then asked Emma.
“Want these?”
Emma looked.
“Too small.”
“Do you remember hiding something in them?”
Emma shrugged.
“The medicine thing?”
“Yes.”
She thought.
Then:
“Can we give them away?”
Rachel smiled.
“Yes.”
The shoes went into a donation bag.
No museum.
May you like
No shrine.
Good.
