Chapter 3 - Olivia

The ambulance arrived before anyone arrested anybody.
Correct priority.
Olivia was pale.
Sweating.
Sleepy now.
That worried the paramedics more than the stomach pain.
One asked:
“What did you take?”
Olivia shook her head.
“Daddy medicine.”
“Do you know the name?”
“No.”
“Was it a pill?”
She shook her head.
“Wet.”
“From the syringe?”
Emma nodded before Olivia could.
“Yes.”
The paramedic looked at me.
I held up the sealed evidence envelope.
“She brought the delivery device.”
Michael demanded to ride in the ambulance.
The paramedic refused until custody and safety questions were resolved.
He became furious.
Not violent.
Controlled fury.
“I am a physician.”
The medic answered:
“Then you understand why we’re not delaying transport.”
That ended it.
Olivia went to the hospital.
Emma went too, in a separate police vehicle with a female officer and child-services emergency worker who met us there.
Michael followed in his own vehicle after being told not to interfere.
I stayed long enough to finish the station report.

Then Detective Laura Kim took over.
What I thought would be one disturbing afternoon became a six-month investigation.
