Chapter 9 - The Loose Insole

Why did Emma hide the syringe in her shoe?
Because she had tried pockets before.
Two months earlier, she found a pharmacy paper in the trash.
She took it.
Michael found it in her backpack.
According to Emma:
“He said grown-up medicine papers weren’t toys.”
He threw it away.
After that, Emma started hiding things beneath a loose sneaker insole.
Why was it loose?
Cheap glue.
Normal child shoe.
That tiny defect became her hiding place.
She hid:
A torn medication label.
One appointment card.
A handwritten note Michael had left on the kitchen island.
And finally:
the syringe.
She did not understand evidentiary preservation.
She understood:

Daddy throws things away.
So hide them where Daddy doesn’t look.
