Chapter 10 - The independent investigation

The board hired former federal prosecutor Elaine Foster.
Not family counsel.
Not my people.
Her mandate:
Sofia program administration.
Dominic’s vendor relationships.
Prior complaints.
Management oversight.
No broader investigation into every Romano business.
Specific.
Forensic accountants reviewed eighteen months of program transactions.
The hotel operator provided emails.
Foundation auditors provided invoices.
Hospital social workers were interviewed.
Families were contacted carefully.
No one told them:
Rocco wants you to say X.
I stayed out.
Hated it.
Useful.
The first confirmed finding came after two weeks.
DCH Guest Solutions was owned by Dominic’s college friend, Aaron Chase.
But bank records later showed Dominic received monthly consulting payments from DCH through a separate marketing entity he controlled.
Approximately $7,500 a month.
No legitimate work product.
Over fourteen months:
$105,000.
There.
Not yet the whole number.
May you like
But real.
