Chapter 14 - The missing families

Investigators contacted twenty-three displaced families.
Not all felt mistreated.
Important.
Seven said the alternate hotels were acceptable.
Three actually preferred being farther from the busy downtown.
Five did not remember details.
Eight reported serious problems.
Long travel times.
No late-night shuttle.
No meal credit.
One mother paid $94 in rideshares over two days.
One father slept at the hospital because the alternate hotel was too far during his daughter’s post-surgery complications.
Another family had been told the Bellweather:
“was not appropriate for extended medical stays.”
That sentence did not appear in any program policy.
Dominic had created his own category of who looked appropriate in luxury space.
Maeve and Rebecca were almost the twenty-fourth case.
Except a little girl stopped beside the wrong wheelchair.
Or the right one.

Depends how you tell the story.
