Chapter 18 - The main truth

The main truth was not that Dominic hated children with cancer.
He did not.
It would have been easier if he were that simple.
He believed the Bellweather’s luxury identity had to be protected.
His annual bonus depended heavily on:
Average daily rate.
Premium convention revenue.
Guest-satisfaction scores.
Operating margin.
The Sofia program paid less than high-demand corporate guests.
During busy weeks, Dominic saw approved families as revenue displacement.
At first he used the relocation clause legitimately.
Then he discovered alternate hotels cost far less than the Sofia reimbursement.
A business opportunity appeared.
He helped create DCH Guest Solutions through a friend.
The company handled relocation.
Then billed inflated management fees.
Dominic received consulting money through another entity.
He told himself:
Families still get rooms.
Hotel improves revenue.
Foundation budget already expects lodging costs.
Everyone wins.
Except the foundation paid for services it did not receive.
Some families traveled farther.
Some lost meal benefits.
Some were denied the dignity the program explicitly promised.
Then image became part of it.
Dominic believed families carrying medical equipment or waiting with food bags made convention guests uncomfortable.
No evidence showed he issued a written:
Keep poor people out.
He used phrases.
Premium guest flow.
Lobby congestion.
Solicitation prevention.
Brand protection.
The culture adapted.
Maeve approached me with coins.
Dominic did not ask who she was.
Did not ask who I was.
He saw the scene his own assumptions had trained him to see.
Beggar.
Child.
Luxury lobby.
Remove problem.
That was why he knocked the coins away.
That was why he grabbed the chair.
His criminal fraud and his treatment of me came from the same deeper habit:
People and programs existed to serve the image and economics of the hotel.
Anything that complicated that could be moved somewhere else.
My own mistake came from a related place.
I believed being angry and powerful gave me the right to announce guilt before process finished.
Different conduct.
Same temptation.
Control first.
Truth later.

The investigation taught me the order had to reverse.
