Chapter 21 - My email comes back

Dominic’s civil defamation claim against me did not disappear simply because he later pleaded guilty.

My email accused him of:

stealing from sick families

before the accounting was complete.

The broad statement was substantially connected to conduct later established.

But my threat-like language created separate problems.

Anyone who helped him will answer for it.

Every person who protected this will be removed.

Employees testified that they feared cooperation could cost them jobs depending what I thought they knew.

That was bad.

We settled Dominic’s personal civil claims alongside the assault matter without admitting unrelated liability.

Modest payment largely covering medical costs and certain fees, offset by other claims.

More important:

I issued an internal written acknowledgment.

My initial email was inappropriate.

No employee should have been threatened, directly or indirectly, for involvement or truthful cooperation.

Miriam made me sign it.

I joked:

“Do I get crayons?”

She did not laugh.
