Chapter 23 - Walking

My recovery continued.
Slowly.
At month six, cane for short distances.
Wheelchair for long ones.
At month nine, I could cross a restaurant without assistance.
Airports still exhausted me.
At one year, I stopped using the chair daily.
Not because I finally became:
really able to walk.
Because my endurance improved.
The old steel chair remained in storage at physical therapy.
One reporter asked:
“Do you regret using it at the Bellweather?”
I said:
“No. I needed it.”
That was all.
Maeve once saw me with a cane.
“You upgraded.”
“What?”
“Chair to stick.”
I laughed.
“Something like that.”
She nodded.
“Don’t hit people with stick.”
Apparently my reputation remained complicated.
“I won’t.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
