Chapter 1 - The phone was still recording

My name is Dominic Vale.
I built a billion-dollar private-security company teaching other people how not to miss danger.
Then danger found my daughter inside a house I had personally approved as safe.
Lily was eight.
Small.
Sensitive.
Smart enough to know that when an adult tells you to hand over the only evidence you have, you should hold on tighter.
By the time my team entered the living room, Ethan Cross was pinned against the sofa.
His lip was bleeding from the fall through the coffee table.
Lily was behind me.
Her pale-blue dress was wrinkled.
Her cardigan torn near one sleeve.
There were red marks across her back where the belt had struck.
Nothing gruesome.
Enough.
My security director, Miles Arden, entered first.
“Sir?”
“Take the belt.”
He did.
“Secure the room.”
Three other men spread out.
Nobody hit Ethan.
Nobody threatened him.
Nobody dragged him into a basement.
I had spent too much of my life around powerful men who confused punishment with investigation.
I was not going to become one because I was furious.
I turned toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, can you stand?”
She nodded.
Then immediately reached for me.
I lifted her.
Her shattered phone was still in her hand.
The screen looked dead.
Then a tiny red recording indicator flickered beneath the broken glass.
Lily whispered:
May you like
“I didn’t stop it.”
That sentence changed everything.
