Chapter 15 - The broken phone

The physical phone became strangely important to Lily.
After forensic extraction, police eventually returned it.
I expected her to throw it away.
She did not.
She asked:
“Can you fix it?”
“Yes.”
“Same screen?”
“No. New screen.”
She considered.
“Will recording still be there?”
“The official copy is safe. We can restore your files too.”
“Then fix.”
I did.
Not personally.
I am a billionaire.
I know enough to avoid pretending I repair microelectronics.
When the phone came back, Lily changed the case.
Bright yellow.
She said:
“So I can see it.”
Then laughed.
For weeks afterward, she recorded ordinary things.
Our dog snoring.
Rain.
May you like
Me burning toast.
Evidence had become life again.
