Chapter 26 - The yellow phone

Two years later, Lily was ten.
She still had the repaired phone.
Different battery.
Same account.
Bright yellow case.
One afternoon she walked into my office recording.
“State your name.”
I looked up.
“Dominic Vale.”
“Occupation?”
“Apparently being interrogated.”
“Did you eat my last cookie?”
I stared.
“This conversation is over.”
She zoomed in.
“Suspect refusing cooperation.”
“I have lawyers.”
“You look guilty.”
I had eaten it.
She knew.
The recording ended with both of us laughing.
That sound mattered to me.
Her phone was no longer something she clutched because an adult wanted to silence her.
