Chapter 4 - Lily would not let go of the phone

A detective asked for the device.

Lily pulled it closer to her chest.

“No.”

I knelt.

“They need it because it might have evidence.”

“What if they break it?”

“It’s already pretty broken.”

She almost smiled.

Then:

“What if Ethan gets it?”

“He won’t.”

“You promise?”

“Yes.”

She gave the phone to the detective.

The device itself was damaged.

But Lily’s account automatically uploaded recordings to encrypted cloud storage whenever connectivity existed.

Ethan apparently knew her phone could record.

He did not know it could upload continuously.

The phone contained:

Video.

Audio.

Messages.

And approximately twenty-three minutes of recording before the screen shattered.

Investigators obtained the data through proper process.

My company technicians did not secretly alter it.

We preserved the original account logs.

The recording began because Lily had opened the camera after hearing Ethan arguing with someone.

She had not planned to spy on him.

She wanted to record what she called:

“The weird grown-up conversation.”
