Chapter 11 - Why Lily was at the Cross mansion

This question tormented me.
Why had I brought her there?
Because I trusted the family.
Ethan’s father, Graham Cross, had known me for sixteen years.
We had disagreed in business.
Never personally.
His sister Margaret adored Lily.
The plan:
Lily would have dinner with Margaret.
Watch a movie.
I would collect her after my board event.
Safe.
Ordinary.
Then Margaret’s migraine worsened.
She told household staff Lily could remain until I returned.
Ethan arrived unexpectedly.
If I had known Margaret left?
I would have picked Lily up.
Nobody called.
Small communication failure.
Huge consequence.
I spent weeks blaming myself.
Lily’s therapist eventually said:
“You made a reasonable childcare decision based on people you had reason to trust. Updating your judgment afterward is responsible. Rewriting yourself as negligent because you know the outcome is hindsight.”

Useful sentence.
Still difficult to live with.
