Chapter 2 - How I knew to come

I had not arrived by coincidence.
Two hours earlier, I had left Lily at the Cross estate while I attended a board dinner ten minutes away.
The Cross family had known mine for years.
Their investment company owned commercial real estate.
My company, Vale Protective Systems, secured several of those properties.
Ethan Cross was twenty-seven.
Spoiled.
Arrogant.
But until that evening, I considered him immature rather than dangerous.
Lily was supposed to remain with Ethan’s aunt and two household employees while I was gone.
The aunt left early because of a migraine.
One housekeeper went home.
Another worked downstairs.
Ethan came back unexpectedly.
At 8:42 p.m., my phone received a silent alert.
Not a call.
An emergency gesture Lily knew how to use.
Press side button five times.
My company installed the feature on family devices.
It sent:
Location.
Ten seconds of environmental audio.
A silent priority alert.
What I heard was Lily crying.
Then Ethan:
“Give me the phone.”
Then a crash.
I left the dinner before anyone could ask why.
My nearby protection team followed.

Four minutes later, Lily’s phone stopped transmitting location.
Six minutes later, I reached the mansion.
