Chapter 3 - My punch

I handed Rosie to my cousin Mark for perhaps five seconds.
Long enough to walk toward Bethany.
Long enough to make a bad decision.
I punched her once.
Bethany fell sideways against her chair.
The wine glass dropped.
Red wine soaked the carpet.
Daniel jumped up.
Someone screamed.
I stood over Bethany and said:
“You hurt my child.”
I wish I could tell you that punch was necessary.
It was not.
Rosie was already away from Bethany.
There was no active attack.
I was furious.
That is explanation.
Not justification.
Later, my attorney would say:
“The photograph helps Rosie’s case.”
Then:
May you like
“The dining-room video hurts yours.”
Both were true.
